Une évocation de la vie et de l'oeuvre du saxophoniste Barney Wilen, musicien mythique ayant joué à dix-huit ans aux côtés de Miles Davis, et que beaucoup qualifièrent de "plus grand saxophoniste européen". Exilé à Zanzibar dans les années soixante-dix auprès d'une aristocrate déchue, héros de la bande-dessinée culte de Loustal, La Note bleue, Barney Wilen fut aussi célèbre pour ses brillantes apparitions que pour ses disparitions inexpliquées. Sous forme d'essai cinématographique, ce film reconstitue un parcours de vie mystérieux, foisonnant, tout en questionnant la part de mythe du personnage. Ce portrait en pointillé sera tracé en compagnie notamment de Laurent de Wilde, Philippe Garrel et Archie Shepp.
The life and times of Barney Wilen, the legendary jazz musician who at age 18 was already playing with Miles Davis, and whom many called the "greatest European saxophonist." Exiled to Zanzibar in the 70s where he lives among the impoverished nobility, hero of Loustal's cult comic strip, The Blue Note, Wilen was as famous for his brilliant appearances as for his inexplicable disappearances. This film essay reconstitutes his rich, mysterious life even as it attempts to distinguish the man from the myth. With the participation of Laurent de Wilde, Philippe Garrel and Archie Shepp.
