Eje Thelin (1939 -90) was recently chosen
by the commitee of the French "Django d'Or" prize as "LEGEND OF JAZZ",
and a concert was held in his honour at Nalen in Stockholm. Swedish
trombonist Eje Thelin and French tenor saxophonist Barney Wilen were two
of the top European jazz musicians for several decades before their
deaths in the 1990s. They first joined forces briefly in Thelin's
quartet in 1963. Based in bop and earlier forms of jazz, Thelin and
Wilen were open to freer improvising and music from other countries. In
1966 they joined forces, and two sessions are included on the 1966 With
Barney Wilen CD. The first one features a quintet with pianist Lars
Sjösten, bassist Erik Lundborg, and drummer Rune Carlsson that is joined
by eight brass, bass clarinet, and flute for four inventive Thelin
originals. While those performances are excellent, it is the other five
numbers (which include second versions of a pair of Thelin's tunes plus
"It Could Happen to You" and "Dear Old Stockholm") that are of greatest
interest. The playing by the pianoless quartet (comprised of Thelin,
Wilen, Carlsson, and bassist Palle Danielsson) is looser and freer with
plenty of fireworks occurring in the often intuitive music. This set is
easily recommended, particularly to listeners who are not aware that
talented Europeans had been playing creative jazz for decades

This "Concert Hall" SJS 1346 is one of the
more rare LP issues on the "label", in Europe at the end of the sixties.
This is "Free Jazz", a realisation
of the producer Jacques Bisceglia, who was with Georgakarakos at the
origin of the "BYG" records. On this "Free Jazz n° 1" (we never had the
n° 2), Jacques Bisceglia realised a compilation of recordings in Paris
between 1966 until 1969. "Touareg", by Archie Shepp, Malachi Favors and
Philly Joe Jones, (16/08/69), "My You", by Jimmy Lyons, with Alan Silva,
Andrew Cyrille and Lester Bowie (15/08/69), "Ramblin" by Paul Bley with
Mark Levinson and Barry Altschul (1/07/66, Rome), "Invisible Blues", by
Sunny Murray, with Byard Lancaster, Kenneth Terroade and Malachi Favors,
and "Ponte Io" by Grachan Moncur III, with Fernando Martins, Beb Guérin

A phantom Wilen album!
"FREE JAZZ" (MOULOUDJI EM-13 507) - A phantom Wilen album!
By “BC”
A few years ago, I was assembling a collection of recordings
deemed to be important in the history and development of French
jazz.
One album was Adda/In Situ 590039 entitled '1965, François
Tusques, Free Jazz'. On reading the titles and booklet notes,
I realised that this CD was a reissue of the legendary Mouloudji
'Free Jazz' album - with the added bonus of 2 previously
unreleased tracks.
The recording date was given as 26th October 1965 and the
release date of the original Mouloudji 'Free Jazz' LP as 1966.
The proximity of recording and release dates seemed sensible but,
as a keen Barney Wilen fan, I remembered that in all Wilen
discographies known to me (Lord, Warren, Genty, Loustal), the
release date was, invariably, given as 1975 - nearly a decade
later!
My next move was to look for other Mouloudji LPs and to look for
any correlation between album number and release date.
EM-13 513 "Marie Noel" by Christiane Perrin had a known 1966
provenance whilst EM-13 517 "Le Nouveau Jazz" by François
Tusques/Barney Wilen was known to date from 1967.
Logically, therefore, it would follow that EM-13 507 "Free Jazz"
appeared before either of the previous albums!
This inference is very strong circumstantial evidence - but it
is not definitive proof.
However, the real clincher is the rear sleeve of "Le Nouveau
Jazz" LP which features an advertisement for the "Free Jazz" LP
(see the Loustal website) and provides incontrovertible proof
that the "Free Jazz" album was available in 1967.
Although accepted and listed as a Wilen item (in all
discographies), I have long believed that "Free Jazz" does not
feature Wilen.
I have listened long and hard to the In Situ CD and can find no
aural evidence to support Wilen's presence on any track.
The In Situ listing is:- Vitet (trumpet), Jeanneau (sax/flute),
Portal (bs clt), Saudrais (percussion), Guerin (bass) & Tusques
(pno).
Two reedmen are already present in the sextet - why would
Tusques wish to engage Wilen as a third?
The CD booklet carries photographs of the front & rear sleeves
of the original Mouloudji album, together with extensive notes
on
the recording artists. Unsurprisingly, Wilen is not mentioned on
any of the 16 pages - nor on the CD inlay.
On the www.organissimo.org website there is a post quoting
Tusques as saying that Wilen was not present at the session.
Again, the real clincher is the rear sleeve of the "Free Jazz"
LP itself, which lists the sextet (as above) - with no mention
of Wilen.
So there you have it, "Free Jazz" dates from 1966 and it does
not feature Barney Wilen - but it is still a cracking LP!
|
My comments refer to the Mouloudji
EM-13507 "Free Jazz" album.
It is my opinion that every known published Wilen discography has got
this one wrong!
I can only think that the errors must go back a very long way - but how
& why did they occur and why have they never been corrected?
I have not seen the original Mouloudji disc (nor do I know of anyone
else who has - it has almost mythical status)!
This website lists
to the disc - but provides no information or illustrations.
Instead, your site concentrates on the Concert Hall disc - a reissue of
the Mouloudji (see below).
ERROR 1:- DATE. This disc dates from 1965 not 1975.
My evidence:-
(a) The other rare Mouloudji (EM-133517 "Le Nouveau Jazz") originally
appeared as EM-13 517 and dates from 1967 which is correct, as per your
discography.
How EM-13 517 became EM-133517 is unknown - possibly the record carried
one number whilst the sleeve carried the other?
[EM-13 513 "Marie Noel" by Christiane Perrin has a known 1966 recording
date - suggesting that Mouloudji's numbering sequence was strictly
chronological.]
(b) So, if we write EM-13507 as EM-13 507 we can infer that, from the
numerical sequence, that it was issued before "Le Nouveau Jazz" i.e. in
1965/6.
(c) The Concert Hall "Free Jazz" LP (SJS 1346), issued in 1969, is a
track-by-track reissue of the Mouloudji of the same title.
Very obviously, the 1969 release date makes a recording date of 1975
impossible!
(d) A French CD [In Situ 590039 "1965, Francois Tusques, Free Jazz"]
issued in 1990, was the initial release of the complete Paris concert
from October 26th 1965.
The CD inlay cites the 1966 Mouloudji as the very first issue of this
concert - but only 3, of the 6 tracks recorded, ever appeared on the LP.
ERROR 2:- PERSONNEL. Take a deep breath -
I do not believe that Wilen appears on the "Free Jazz" LP (Mouloudji or
Concert Hall) at all!
My evidence:-
(a) I own the In Situ CD and have listened extremely carefully to every
track. I can find no aural evidence to support Wilen's presence on the
session.
His name appears neither in the personnel listing nor in the CD booklet
notes.
(b) Logically, Francois Tusques (the session leader) is most unlikely to
have used three reedmen in a sextet assembled for a one-off concert!
(We also need to remember that Wilen had not recorded at all since
1962.)
The published line-up for the 1965 Paris concert was Vitet (tpt),
Jeanneau (sax/fl), Portal (bs clt), Saudrais (perc), Guerin (bs) and
Tusques (pno).
(c) Francois Tusques, himself, is quoted as saying that Wilen was NOT
present at the Paris concert at the Comedie des Champs-Elysees, Paris on
26/10/65.
See post #85 on the website page
www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=4704&st=75
This particular topic, devoted to Wilen's recordings, runs to 10 pages
and some 141 posts.

The pics look most interesting but I am
not sure exactly what I am looking at.
The extreme bottom right hand corner pic does look like Wilen, I will
admit.
Are these pics of an actual Mouloudji EM-13507 LP?
Why the obvious folds on the right hand pic - was this sheet an insert
with the LP since it is much smaller than either the LP itself or its
sleeve?
My final caveat is that Wilen was the only 'big name' on the French 'free-jazz'
scene at that time and may have been used to promote the LP - even if he
was not actually present on the session!
{Mouloudji was a very small label struggling to survive and make sales
at all costs].
Wilen was known to be in his 'experimental' and 'free-jazz' phase at
around 1965 and would certainly have been a far greater sales "pull"
than the relatively unknown Tusques (session leader).
I would be particularly interested in the printed text on the 3rd pic
and also a large size image of the record label itself (which does not
look like any Mouloudji which I have previously seen).
The reverse of the sleeve should also provide information regarding
recording / release dates - I presume that you do not have a copy?

Barney Wilen : La Note Bleue
(IDA), 1986.

Marie Möör : Prends-moi, prends-moi /Beau masque, French 7" on Polydor 887 363-7 (1988). Mary is the sexy lolita singer, the band is : Michel Moers & Jerome Braque (synth), Michel Arich (guitar) and Barney Wilen (saxophones). Wilen wrote the 2 tracks, arranged and produced. Side one is calypso synth ending with a great saxophone solo, side two is mambo (or rumba ?) new wave synth ending in saxophone. I will add that even if I think jazz singles are not really sought-after, in general, you single no chance to hear the first side nowhere else, and not buying it means you will not get the complete Barney discography, until it is reisued. (side 2 has been released on cd in 1992, but maybe it's a re-recording, I don't know). The single is ultra-rare.

"Recorded at his home in
Paris from February to April 1998, Sands is Steve Lacy's most personal and
remarkable solo document, and explores a wide variety of musical and dramatic
subjects. Portraits of close friends Barney Wilen and William Burroughs;
collaborations with the texts of Allen Ginsberg and Samuel Beckett; and of
course his own peculiar take on identity and Jewish heritage, which he
characterizes in his most recent composition 'Jewgitive'. The music of Lacy,
like Judaism itself, is a praxis, a question, a floating anxiety, and Sands is
one of Lacy's most poignant and intense recordings."

Roach (drums).Recorded in New York, New York on January 17, 1951 and June 25,
1958; Paris, France on December 4 & 5, 1957. Includes liner notes by Max
Harrison. It's difficult to determine what the governing theme of this collection
is, other than the demostration of Miles' veratility in different situations.
The tunes come from sessions dated 1951, 1957 and 1958, each with a radically
different group of players. The 1951 sessions find the unstoppable Miles going
toe to toe with Charlie Parker over the rhythmic underpinnings of Max Roach.
Placed in the unenviable position of trading solos with Parker on Au Privave and
K.C. Blues, Miles proves his mettle admirably. The Paris 1957 session finds
Miles accompanied by Pierre Michelot and Kenny Clarke, among others, and the
music produced ranks among the most atmospheric and understated of Miles' career
(check out the serie L 'Assassinat De Carala).

Armstrong-Ella, Parker-Dizzy, Duke-Coltrane, Miles-Wilen...
